Motivation gets a lot of credit. And to be fair, it can be powerful.
Wanting to improve, reach the next level or achieve something meaningful can absolutely get you started.
I recently earned my First Dan black belt in Filipino Martial Arts, and reaching that milestone definitely involved motivation.
But motivation is not what got me there - consistency did.
It was showing up to class regularly.
Participating in the drills.
Repeating techniques over and over.
Learning from the sessions that went well - and the ones that did not.
There were definitely evenings when I had to drag myself out of the house.
And no, I was not always springing enthusiastically into each class knowing there was a reasonable chance I might get punched in the face during drills!
But I went anyway...Not because I felt motivated every time, but because training had become something I had committed to.
That is the part of progress we often underestimate.
Motivation can point you towards a goal.
Consistency is what carries you there.
The same applies to fitness.
You will not always feel excited to train.
Sometimes the best session is the one you nearly skipped.
Sometimes progress looks like doing 20 minutes instead of an hour.
Sometimes it means turning up, doing what you can and leaving knowing you kept the habit alive.
Try this
On the days when motivation is low, ask yourself:
"What is the smallest version of this that I can still do today?"
A short walk.
A lighter workout.
Ten minutes of mobility.
One strength session instead of three.
It does not have to be perfect.
It just has to keep you moving.
Motivation may help you begin.
Consistency is what builds confidence, skill and progress over time.
And sometimes, if you keep showing up long enough, it also earns you a black belt.
